While it lacks some of the basic features that less-expensive models boast, we think a recent price drop to $500 makes it a good pick—especially if you don't want an ugly robot roaming your house. We recommend a few different types of vacuums that usually cost about $150, including an excellent bagless upright vacuum, a decent cordless vacuum, and a basic (but good!) robot vacuum. You’ll avoid cleaning because you need to unravel the cord.
We’d argue that robot vacuums are the best tool for cleaning up pet hair because they can dutifully keep up with the mess at a pace that few humans have the time or patience to match. This affordable robot vacuum is quieter and fits under more furniture than any other model we’ve tested. While it works best in small spaces, it rarely gets stuck and does a good job on bare floors and short-pile rugs. They’re easier to maintain than cheaper uprights and most canister vacuums, and should last longer than all but the sturdiest high-end machines. That said, in general, I give the Hom-Bot a passing grade for cleaning power, as it left our floors looking noticeably cleaner after almost every run. On a common, plushy, midpile carpet, the Hom-Bot even managed to pick up about twice as much pet hair as the Roomba -- although it still came up well short of the Neato.
You can activate Turbo Mode to rev the robot up past its default speed for maximum suction (the Hom-Bot will do this automatically when it's cleaning carpet). Best of all might be My Space Mode, which lets you use the remote to steer the vacuum around a small area and manually define its cleaning boundaries. From then on, the Hom-Bot will remember those boundaries and go straight to that spot whenever the mode is activated.
