The Hom-Bot boasts some interesting bells and whistles, but after comparing its price and performance with the competition, it’s a tough purchase to justify. LG Hom-Bot Square review: Don't get sucked in by this overpriced vacuum
While it lacks some of the basic features that less-expensive models boast, we think a recent price drop to $500 makes it a good pick—especially if you don't want an ugly robot roaming your house. We recommend a few different types of vacuums that usually cost about $150, including an excellent bagless upright vacuum, a decent cordless vacuum, and a basic (but good!) robot vacuum. You’ll avoid cleaning because you need to unravel the cord.
We’d argue that robot vacuums are the best tool for cleaning up pet hair because they can dutifully keep up with the mess at a pace that few humans have the time or patience to match. This affordable robot vacuum is quieter and fits under more furniture than any other model we’ve tested. While it works best in small spaces, it rarely gets stuck and does a good job on bare floors and short-pile rugs. If you want an affordable, versatile vacuum cleaner—nothing fancy, but something dependably solid—look for a bagless upright vacuum that costs about $150. Repeat Mode will prevent the Hom-Bot from deciding that the job is done, forcing it to keep on cleaning the space until you tell it to stop.
The Best Robot Vacuums
They’re easier to maintain than cheaper uprights and most canister vacuums, and should last longer than all but the sturdiest high-end machines. That said, in general, I give the Hom-Bot a passing grade for cleaning power, as it left our floors looking noticeably cleaner after almost every run. On a common, plushy, midpile carpet, the Hom-Bot even managed to pick up about twice as much pet hair as the Roomba -- although it still came up well short of the Neato.

You can activate Turbo Mode to rev the robot up past its default speed for maximum suction (the Hom-Bot will do this automatically when it's cleaning carpet). Best of all might be My Space Mode, which lets you use the remote to steer the vacuum around a small area and manually define its cleaning boundaries. From then on, the Hom-Bot will remember those boundaries and go straight to that spot whenever the mode is activated.

Cordless vacuums and robot vacuums are a lot more convenient to use. They do cost a lot more than plug-ins with similar cleaning power, though. August 3, PC MagazineThe LG Hom-Bot Square is a compact, relatively quiet robotic vacuum cleaner with a convenient remote control, but it's simply priced too high.... The Hom-Bot offers around 100 minutes of cleaning time on a 2-hour battery charge. If the Hom-Bot's battery runs low during a run, it will automatically return to its base to charge, then return to where it left off and finish cleaning. This puts it on par with most other robot vacuums, although it's worth noting that the Roomba 790 boasts up to 4 hours of cleaning on a single charge.

A dedicated "Spiral Mode" capable of covering an entire room would have been a great feature. For now, though, spot-cleaning mode will have to suffice. If you're on the fence, we'd wait a few months until a new generation of robot vacuums debut. In addition to hotly anticipated models from Dyson and Panasonic, new LG and Samsung robot vacs will be able to memorize your home's floorplan, travel from room to room, and double as security cameras. We spent a week with it, and found that LG has created a worthy competitor to some of the more established names on the market. The Hom-Bot not only looks great, but it has excellent dirt pickup, is easy to use, and can even clean tall carpet—a task a lot of the competition struggles with.
Its handsome, ruby-red exterior has won design awards, and with over an hour of battery life, this LG can easily cover an entire open-concept floorplan. Electronics giant LG just released a new robot vacuum, and we had the chance to test it in the same labs where we've put best-sellers from iRobot and Neato through their paces. Plus, the SharkClean app lets you start and stop cleaning and schedule your robot to clean whenever you want. With a camera mounted on the bottom, Hom-Bot maps the area around your home as it cleans. It also calculates the optimal cleaning paths to make sure it doesn’t miss a spot. Scheduled cleaning so your home is spotless when you return home. It even features auto-recharging and will resume cleaning where it left off.
It made loud screeching noises during the climb, likely due to the automatic engagement of the high-powered Turbo function. Normally, we wouldn't harp on sound quality, since the best practice is to run your robot vacuum while you're out of the house. However, since LG advertises how quiet its machine is, the noise is worth noting. If you have any carpeting like that, and you want to clean it thoroughly, your best bet is to get a vacuum with an adjustable cleaning head—one that can rise or fall with the carpet height. If you have asthma or severe allergies, and indoor air quality is crucial to your health, a high-quality bagged vacuum is a safe bet.
This style is also great for cleaning up around the house. Alternatively, you can try to clean longer rugs by turning off the brush roll or turning down the suction . Any decent vacuum can clean up pet hair, so don’t fret about this. Our favorite vacuum is good whether or not you have pets.
Like most robot vacuums, you can set it and forget it if you like, letting it run automatically on the default settings. To really get the most out of it, you'll want to experiment with the different cleaning modes. Fans of the television show "Breaking Bad" might remember that slacker homeowner Jesse Pinkman is a Roomba owner. The Hom-Bot, on the other hand, would be a better fit for a control freak like Walter White. For a mix of bare floors and rugs, the surest bet is to get a vacuum that lets you turn the brush roll on or off.
